Healthy Valentine's Day Ideas

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and gift givers and receivers often end up with treats loaded with fat and sugar. Fortunately, you can still have your cake and eat it too. Whether you are making a tasty gift for your child’s classroom or for friends or relatives, it is possible to come up with something that is both nutritionally sound and delicious.

When planning special treats, try to keep sugar to a minimum and eliminate empty calories. This can easily be done by including items such as fruits, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products. Keep in mind, however, for kids, appearance is everything and they will not try what does not appeal to them.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Popular frosted sugar cookies can be made with a healthy twist:
  • Instead of regular sugar, use a sugar alternative or honey. Honey is sweeter than sugar, so less is needed in a recipe. Honey also includes vitamins and minerals that help with digestion.
  • Substitute whole wheat flour for white flour as it is packed with more nutrients.
  • Replace unsweetened applesauce for oil or butter.
  • Spread low fat and/or sugar free frosting on top of the cookies.
  • Use dried cranberries instead of candied hearts or sprinkles.

Fresh fruit such as strawberries, bananas and kiwi can be dipped in melted dark chocolate for a visually appealing and healthy treat. Dark chocolate is also rich in antioxidants.

These treats are simple and healthy Valentine’s Day delights. Enjoy sharing them with your family and friends!
