The Wild West Stampede is not just for professional cowboys and cowgirls. There are a number of events for kids to participate in, as Wild West Week, April 18-25 brings the community together for a fun-filled week of old-time western activities. Mutton Bustin’ is a sport for youngsters who think it’s great fun to be a cowboy. Donning a helmet instead of a cowboy hat, they climb on the back of a wild and woolly sheep and hang on for the ride. The Wild West Stampede Mutton Bustin’ event is held each day prior to the PRCA rodeo. Children must be four to seven years old, weigh no more than 60 pounds, and wear bicycle helmets. The event is limited to 25 Busters each day, which fill fast, and pre-registration is required. Registration is $35 and includes one child and one adult pass to the rodeo and a Mutton Buster t-shirt. The best rides each day are awarded championship buckles. The Best Dressed Cowboy or Cowgirl is awarded a pair of Justin boots and a pair of Wrangler jeans. Every child will receive a participant ribbon and a goody bag. To sign up for Mutton Bustin,’ go on-line to www.auburnrodeo.com or call Sandy Starch at 530 878-6357. Kids up to 12 years old can take a shot at lassoing a “Dummy” steer head in an event known as Dummy Roping. Every participating child will receive prizes including their own ropes, and winners will receive buckles. Dummy Roping will be held on Wednesday during the Kick Off Party at Magnussen Dodge on April 21, at 6:00 pm. To sign up for the Wrangler Dummy Roping go to www.auburnrodeo.com or call Marcy Williams at 916 434-0303. Pre-registration is recommended. Registration fee is $20. The 2010 Wild West Week is scheduled for April 18-26, with the Stampede PRCA Rodeo wrapping up the week on April 24 and 25 at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn.
