ROSEVILLE, Calif., - The first mosquito samples in Placer County to test positive this year for the West Nile virus have been reported in the  town of Sheridan and Elverta area of western Placer County.

"This is a clear indication that West Nile virus is in our area, and with the significant increase in mosquito populations throughout the county, we are very concerned that human transmission can easily happen," stated Joel Buettner, General Manager of the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District.

Due to this latest development, the District has scheduled a truck fogging for the early morning of July 23rd in the following areas:

 ·         Sheridan - all streets in town, both sides of Riosa Road to 8th Street, the length of Camp Far West Road south of Lichty Lane, and the entire length of Lichty Lane.

 ·         Elverta - the area north of Baseline Road to Jackson Road, between Locust Road and Brewer Road, and the entire length of Country Acres Lane.

Since several factors affect spraying activities, such as weather and wind conditions, the District encourages Placer residents to check the District website at www.placermosquito.org for any changes to the spraying schedule.

It is inevitable that people will be outside taking advantage of the milder temperatures this week, especially during peak mosquito feeding times at dawn and dusk.  However, vector control experts urge residents of Placer County to defend themselves against mosquitoes by wearing an effective insect repellent and staying inside, behind screened windows and doors, whenever possible.

The Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District recommends the 3 Ds of protection:

 ·         Drain any standing water that may produce mosquitoes.

·         Defend yourself and your home by using an effective insect repellent and dressing protectively when outside, and making sure screens on doors and windows are in good condition.

·         Contact the District for any additional help controlling mosquitoes around your home.
